Kenya’s passport ranking has improved, jumping six spots to 67th globally, up from 73rd in 2022, according to the Henley Passport Index. This makes it the eighth most powerful African passport.

The Henley Passport Index compares the visa-free access of 199 different passports to 227 travel destinations. In Africa, the Kenya passport was ranked the most powerful after Seychelles (24th), Mauritius (29th), South Africa (51st), Botswana (58th), Namibia (62nd), Lesotho (64th) and Eswatini (66th). Tanzania’s (69th) and Malawi’s (68th) passports dropped from the top powerful passports in 2022.

Kenyans can visit up to 76 countries without visas, with some destinations such as Fiji, Samoa, Barbados, Cuba, Jamaica, Dominica, Bahamas, Philippines, Malaysia, Maldives and Cambodia offering visas before arrival.

According to the Henley Passport Index, Singapore was ranked as having the world’s most powerful passport, defeating Japan and allowing travel to 192 destinations without any visa.

Henley stated that “Powerful passports are far more than mere travel documents that define our ease of cross-border movement. They also enhance our economic mobility in terms of accessing international investment and business opportunities.”

The Henley Passport Index was created by Dr Christian H. Kaelin and is based on data provided by the International Air Transport Authority (IATA) covering 199 passports and 227 travel destinations.
