    48th Concours d’Elegance Goes International South Africa, Uganda Make Grand Entries

    Expect Stiff Competition from 1947 MGTC, 1934 Rolls Royce Boatail and the 1965 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL

    CBA Africa Concours d’Elegance, Kenya’s annual motorsport calendar, has gone international with three motorcycles from South Africa and 13 from Uganda and five cars from Uganda. 

    Peter Wanday, the Chairman of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club on Thursday said: “This highlights the African continental status of the classiest event on the Kenya motorsport calendar.”

    The 49th in the annual series organized by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club since 1970 and sponsored by CBA Group is themed “Afromotive, a celebration of the history of vintage cars and African pride.”

    “We look forward to seeing how all of us mix the machines and a little of our own creativity bring out our bold and African prints to bring that theme out,” said CBA.

    The oldest machine at the Nairobi Racecourse on Sunday, September 29 will be the Vintage Motorcycle Club of South Africa presenting a 1916 BSA, a 1969 Norton Commando and a 1980 BMW Café Racer displayed by motorcycle enthusiasts Bevan Beckmann, Martin Kaiser and Barend Barnard.

    It will be competing against a 1925 DK W prepared by Satpal Jabbal who has been an overall winner of the event.

    Barend will be riding his 1980 BMW Café Racer while  Johannesburg based Martin will be on his third visit to Kenya with his 1969 Norton Commando.

    Stephen Mbuthi will be making his debut after ‘painstakingly restoring’ a 2010 Suzuki TF 125, the first machine to be assessed by judges. He will be followed by the Honda CBR 600R of Morrison Ssenyange, a member of the Uganda Bikers Association team.

    According to Peter, the 1927 Dodge of Magdi Riad will be the oldest car to be driven on the Total Excellium ramp and along the judging line in front of the main grandstand. 

    “This historical American saloon is listed in the class for cars made before 1930 and will provide competition for the Ngatia Executives 1928 Ford Tudor and John Wroe’s 1928 Ford Model a Pickup.”

    Regular concours competitor Paul Chmngorem who has participated in the event for over 30 years will be aiming for victory in the up to 1300cc Touring car class with his 1962 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia.

    Other competitors include the Jinja, Uganda based Leslie Carvell with a 1970 Volkswagen Beetle and Kokooza Wazzir who has driven his 1996 Mitsuoka Viewt from Kampala.

    Tumaini Muthiga will make his first appearance in a 1973 Mini Morris in the up to 1000cc Touring class. 

    “He (Muthiga) is also  aiming to achieve a repeat class win against for massive motorcycles from Uganda with his 1999 Harley Davidson.”

    Among the favorites in the edition is Sati Gala with his 1947 MTTC, Veronica Wroe’s 1934 Rolls Royce Boatail and the 1965 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL of Sachit Shah.
